Sarah Palin proved to many people for the first time Wednesday night that she has a pulse, and she can read a teleprompter better than some. We knew that much already. We also all should have known most of what she would say, at least in broad strokes. The fact is, however, that Sarah Palin's speech put together for her by the McCain campaign contained a lot of smugness toward her opponents for someone who has yet to be made available even once to answer questions or comment in a non-scripted way. For that matter it contained an awful lot of misinformation about Obama's economic proposals, like the tax cuts he has planned for 95% of Americans, not tax hikes as Palin claimed. My request is that if Sarah Palin is to be given the free airtime for a long-format scripted speech of a major candidate for high office, she should at least be made fully available to answer questions without handlers or coaches; September is far too late to be still waiting to evaluate an almost unknown candidate for VP. Whatever comparisons the McCain camp wants to make between Obama's resume and Palin's, the fact is that America has been getting to know Barack Obama for a few years now, and Obama has earned every opportunity by answering the tough questions with solid answers. Sarah Palin is still being hidden away with McCain's handlers, learning what they tell her she is supposed to say she has always believed.
Maybe I am alone here, but after Obama, not to mention McCain, and every other candidate who actually ran a campaign has had to answer every manner of question, advance lengthy written and spoken policy statements and jump through every other hoop in this long, exhaustive campaign process I found Palin's attitude to be especially obnoxious. In the midst of her one and only act thus far as a candidate, a rhetoric-filled speech of applause-lines, cliches, and smears, she saw fit to smugly accuse Obama of being nothing more than his rhetoric. What exactly do you think that your speech was composed of Governor Palin? It definitely was not full of meaningful ideas, but there was an awful lot of touchy-feely stuff about how swell your family and McCain's family are, and how special your small town hockey-mom journey from PTA to RNC was... well, to borrow your own snide remark about Obama: the Vice Presidency isn't about your personal discovery, so drop the sarcasm and try talking about the actual issues we are facing.
Sarah Palin has a lot to explain, that is the nature of Presidential politics, not a case misogyny as the McCain campaign claims. Palin has not been looked into in the way that many on the short list had been, and the voters have every right in the world to know who she is before they step into the voting booth. If all we get from Palin is a couple brief press releases about her pregnant daughter, followed by phony outrage from the campaign that the media reported on it, then we are being dis served by McCain and Palin. The so-called "liberal media" did not issue a press release about your daughter, you did, Sarah. The Obama camp did not spread smears about your family, they issued statements asking that your family be left out of it. Maybe the real problem is that the McCain-Palin campaign is not giving anything of substance to the public about Sarah Palin yet. Until Sarah Palin has put herself out in front of the public, warts and all, she should save the arrogant derision. Until Palin answers tough questions like Obama has, she should tone down her dismissive attacks. Until Sarah Palin allows herself to sink or swim on her understanding of the issues of today, the media will look for something to report on. Right now, it is the only story they were given by the campaign. The story about the daughter of an abstinence-only advocate being pregnant with the child of another minor who doesn't want bleeping kids, to paraphrase his web page. Maybe that is news, actually, especially if it is the only candid image that we are offered by Palin and McCain to explain just who this person is who wants to be a heartbeat away from leader of the free world. .
Get a job, get a life and get over it. For someone with political background your certainly display a vivid naivete' about speeches and the current two party system in the U.S.A. Obama is great at using the teleprompter. Speeches don't make a President. Obama should be running for Orator of the year. You make a great point about fluff and stuff. In this great technological age why should it take a year to get know someone. All the information you need to now can be found in less than a week. If you want to find out if Obama has written in major legislation it can be found instantly. If you want to find out what executive orders Obama has made it can be known instantly. If you want to know what budget balancing Obama has done there are massive search engines to uncover this lack of experience. As always, one should do their own discovery and make their own choice. Or you can believe the media with their respective agendas.
Palin ability to read the speech was excellent as you say. What is even more stunning (I listened on the NPR) is the way she delivered the speech. She hit every punch line with passion. Her delivery is Vice-Presidential. Palin electrified the Party she believes in. I don't believe your were her audience.
The scrutiny of Palin has started and you can count on the media to do their work; some of the media with integrity others with a political agenda. if your have issues with the vetting process take it out on McCain.
"Speeches don't make a President." (J1ggy)

What made George Bush a President if not the speeches written for him by the Washington apparatchiks?
Who wrote Sara Palen's speech? One of the Washington apparatchiks!
When it comes to Washington establishment, Barack Obama is a game changer, not Sara Palen.
Sara Palen is merely a prettier face for the same Washington apparatchiks to hide behind albeit with new label -- "maverick" -- attached to it.

Oops, I meant: Sarah Palin ...

"Get a job." (J1ggy)
With the economy sputtering after 8 years of utter recklessness and our unemployment rate at 6.1% this is easier said than done.
Right on! I completely agree with you Andrew. I cannot believe that people are defending that speech. They have to be putting us on.
Good analysis, Andrew!
I think I can go on and get ready for November Andrew. Makes me feel good to see people walking around without blinders on. Jim Jones can not fool us all. If we all choose not to drink the poison, I think we can bring this one home.
Obama/Biden 08
I too feel Palin was arrogant and I may add "mean". She reminded me of the Republicans of 20 years ago and this is scary stuff. She and John McCain are being led by folks much more savvy than the both of them. She put out some heavy charges and I hope the media does not back down like they use to. This is a new day. Show the Republicans that they will be challenged. This woman carries a lot of baggage, I can tell. They dressed her up like Andy of Mayberry's girlfriend and she shouted all the great small town America rhetoric with vigor. Now all of a sudden all Democrats are liberals again. The media is against her. We need to find out the truth about Palin. I am so disappointed at the positive headlines I saw this morning. Maybe, I am reading them wrong. Okay, she can read, she can give a good speech. She can not be compared to Obama. That is an insult. The Republicans do not have their Obama. They have a woman who can give a good speech. Obama believes in what he is doing. He has been through the mill and has proved that he believes every word he says. I doubt if Sarah Palin even understands the concept of what she said last night, understands the ramifications of what is to follow.
Totally agree. Republicans have a tendency of hitting below the belt, they're the attack dog. And now she is named the "Pitbull". Has this name been given to her by a democrat, they would've cried sexism and that they would try to say that she was being referred to as a female dog. I'm glad Obama ran a positive campaign, and I hope he keeps it up. It would finally prove to these people that digging dirt and hitting below the belt doesn't always work. Instead on focusing on real issues, this election has been only about petty stuff like arugula and celebrity. WTF?!!
Republicans have definitely chosen to take the low road. Let's see if it works for them.
I am so sick of the sexist comments from the media and the Republican Party. Some seem to think that women are shallow and don't have their own views or brains to make up our own mind? Do these people really think that we will vote for Palin just because of her gender? I wasn't a Hillary Clinton supporter because she was female...I was a supporter because she was Hillary and agreed in her beliefs. Gender had no role in that decision and I am deeply offended by MSNBC's comment tonight stating that undecided women will vote for Palin because she is a woman? Please!!! I do have a strong opinion and my own mind. My choice is for change and Obama is the one to bring us that change.
Totally agree........
Please spare us the double standard. All major political candidates have their speeches written, and they read their speeches from teleprompters. However, not all politicians deliver a speech as well as Palin did.
Your disagreements with the contents of her speech are equally dubious, unless you apply this same standard to the Obama and Biden speeches. Convention speeches are mostly political theater and an introduction into the heart and mind of the candidate. They are not policy statements. I recall nothing specific in Obama's speech. It was merely a listing of the traditional liberal wishes. It was essentially the same old worn out speech given previously by Gore and Kerry, only Obama, using a teleprompter and a speech writer, delivered it better.
You disagree with her. You probably do not even like her-that is clear. But to blather on about how she is an unknown compared to Obama is mind boggling. Please tell me what is a community activist? I have not heard the questioned asked. What did Obama specifically do on a day to day basis as a community activist? I have not heard the questioned asked. What did he successfully accomplish as a community activist? I have not heard the questioned asked. When has Obama ever challenged his own party or party leadership on a major issue? Why did he wait until he was running for President to visit Iraq? Why does he refuse to acknowledge that the surge worked?
When you have asked Obama these tough questions and more, then your criticism of Palin may carry some weight. But remember: Obama is running against John McCain for President, not Palin.
I wasn't moved by Pallin's speech at all, she said nothing, and she came across like the pit bull with lipstick as she called herself. She called Hillary Clinton a whiner, and yet she want to ride on Hillary's coat tail to be a V.P., Hilliary made History, she's trying to capitalize on it. Your Question what is a Community Organizer? A person that works to bring people together, and build communities, that eventually needs a Governor, Without communities, their is no need for governors, mayors, etc; Her speech was divisive, and very tacky, and male or female when you put your self out there, and you want to play with the big dogs, than you need to be able to take it like the big dogs, other wise stay on the porch. I my opinion she allowed herself to be used, by John McCain, and though this campaign is between Obama and McCain she jumped in the middle. When she said is you vote democrat you don't work hard, or you don't love your country. and at the same time rep. strategist are crying she's being attack because she is a woman. (WRONG) Her qualities are being question because she is asking people to support her, and frankly I don't know her. I heard that she is being investigated because she used her power as governor to get a man fired from his job, because he didn't fire a man (her brother-inl-aw )that she wanted fired, not only does that sound and abuse of power to me, it also brings to mind G.W. Bush. and the way he abused his power. So I say bring it on.(the question that is) The more the better

Right on Barb. I was moved by Palin's speech. Unfortunatly I was mostly just moved to throw up. I agree with you entirely-- insulting the community organizers that help people get jobs, that help communities grow and handle their problems, that assist when people have morgage problems is just another sign that McCain doesn't get it. And neither do his speech writers. The reason she is being subjected to maelstrom of media activity is because we don't know her. Her record is being presented as one thing from the campaign and the media is doing its job: checking that record for truth. unfortunatly for the McCain-Palin ticket, the media is discovering that not everything put out is 100% true.
Exactly right Andrew - I find it suspicious that she is being kept from the media. She still has a lot to prove as far as I'm concerned.
Funny thing... Palin kept referring to her 'small town' in Alaska.
Wasilla bills itself as a "city", and has a population and budget that are on par with a typical suburbian school district.
So... Palin's executive experience would be relative to that of the superintendent of a local school district.
Oh sure, she's ready. (gulp)
Not to worry, Mr. Spagnoli. McCain has already announced that the VP in his administration has only two responsibilitites: cast a tie breaking vote and check on the well being of the president on a daily basis. So for all of those women out there that are ready to throw their vote to McCain, wow, what a slap in the face. This is not making history, this is keeping a woman "in her place". Sarah is just along for the ride.
In her speech, she was bragging about her small town ties, yet she was bashing community organizers. I sure hope they're paying attention and taking notes. I would love to see how she takes her stilleto out her mouth. Then again, she might get a free pass because the media wouldn't want to be called biased if they point it out. Funny! Not too long ago, that woman called Hillary a whiner, look who needs some cheese with her whine now.
Liberals really make this country weaker. Look at all the stupid comments.
jtm964,
Your comment is the only one here that strikes me as stupid - well, maybe I'm also stupid for bothering to respond. Newsvine really does have some of the smartest readers/writers on both sides of the divide and the discussion had here can only make this country stronger.
Andrew, thanks for this article. I've already commented on the RNC speeches in other threads, but I just wanted to echo your post in #12. Obama's community activism is an example of fact that there are many way to "serve" this country. McCain chose to serve in uniform; Obama chose to serve by making a difference in Chicago's south side community. It's interesting how these early choices are still vividly reflected in their platforms today.
Moving Speech....just push me further left if that's what the Republicans can come up with. No solutions only accusations, it's like a wild animal cornered and bearing it's teeth lashing out at anything hoping to strike. Where are the policies and solutions this Republican Party is endorsing, hopefully they'll come up with something.
I agree... Palin's speech was way too aggressive. But the lead in from Giuliani was what really shocked me. The pure joy of his attacks were very hard to stomach. His little laughs and smirk on his face between slams made the speech seem ridiculous. The sea of grey hair and white faces chanting USA and DRILL, DRILL, DRILL... pathetic
It is good to see that the Democrats are starting to panic. This article's one sided view of the world shows just how little the Republican have to fear. You proved how much a man you are by taking shots at a 17 year old girl but can't take someone putting a little heat on Obama. You and Keith Olberman make a great pair he looked and sounded like a 5 year old last night. I could tell that Chis Matthews was ashamed to be on the same program as him. Good article. Hack!

Not really seeing the panic. More of a calm peace from the idiot choice of Palin.
I'm not sensing panic, just further unification of the democrats. Republicans want to pretend to take the high road, but all they seem to be doing is charging agressively, into the air avoiding any issues. Like Reagan said "where's the beef?"
HAHAHAHA! Panic; isn't that what McCain did when he chose Palin?
redsky That may not be calm that maybe a stoke. Do you have feeling in both of your hands. :)
Just a few comments from an Alaskan. Sarah is popular in this state but you need to consider the demographics. I believe the only Republican they haven't supported for President since Alaska became a state was Goldwater. Oil runs Alaska. Sarah "fought" the oil companies, not to stop drilling in sensitive areas or to protect wildlife, but to get more taxes/royalties from them! This was immensely popular as some of that money goes into the Permanent Fund, which gets paid out to each resident to the tune of about $1000 a year. Up until a few months ago, Sarah was very supportive of Ted Stevens and all of the money (read Pork) he has brought into the state. Now that he is under indictment, she was quick to throw him under the bus. Alaska is also where people flock to if they represent the fringe. Sarah toned down most of her very fringe stances during the speech, but she is, in reality, somewhere to the right of our current president. And this plays well in Alaska, and especially in Anchorage and Wasilla. What you are seeing is a work very much in progress. They are making this up as the go along.
Palin's speech last night was commendable, but we are desperately in need of someone who knows what we are all going through and I just don't see that in her. I see this as purely a political ploy and it totally insults me. As a 49 year old mother of 4, I just don't get it. I believe that women can have it all and that all of us are capable of doing anything we want to do, but my problem is this. How in the world would a mother or father for that matter throw their child to the wolves just to get them off their back?? And then to add the child's boyfriend to the mix?? And shame on McCain for putting this family in this position. HE DOES NOT USE GOOD JUDGEMENT!! I am extremely appalled. Every MOTHER when she becomes a MOM puts her children first and this is not the picture of a mother that does that. Listen, I don't care what job or aspirations you may have or how capable you are at that job, but as a mother, as a parent, it should ALWAYS ALWAYS be family first. There is absolutely no excuse for this. I am also insulted and tired of the Republicans throwing in the sexism charge. We as American people have a right to know everything we can about any candidate no matter what gender. It isn't that she is a woman and can't handle the job, but we are not talking about a waitress or nurse, or teacher down the street. We are talking about the leader of our country. If she is thrust into that position, shouldn't she be scrutinized and thoroughly vetted for the sake of all of us! Having said that, I do hope that all of us vote on the issues that need to be fixed in this country.
This is a women who as we speak here is trying to move her trooper-gate trial to a panel were she had appointed all the people on that panel if she has noting to fear or hide why is she insisting on moving it to a different court that favors her. I still say there is a lot about her that is unknown and we should wait til all the dust settles from her speech and she is really fully vetted.
Isnt it funny how Obama can be snide, sweetly malicious and condescending and it is overlooked by the media. When Palin gives it back (finally someone has), it results in whining and howls of protest. grow up-it's an election.
Oh Andrew it hasn't stopped, they are still saying he's a muslim. Last time they surveyed, 12% of voters still believe he is. Because he takes the high road by not answering to their sewer attacks, they say he's an elitist. I listen to the "bitter comment" and still don't see why they made such a big deal about it. Now imagine that he spoke the way Palin and McCain have been speaking, he would've been portrayed as an angry black man. The man just can't catch a break. Where are the real issues? Voters need to be educated and not fall for petty attacks like these. A girl can dream I guess.
McCain is and insult, If he wasn't in the Navy. What would he be running on Oil and Iraq and taxes, he speeches has nothing of substance. McCain convention is all about war with Iraq and him being a P.O.W.
You would think he was the only P.O.W IN America the way they was speak about him. Our men in Afghanistan and other region are being left out of his speeches, its about him. We elect this man well be in war before 2010. Cindy McCain should be ashamed bringing up her marriage to McCain, where are your morale's,values and respect for the mother of his first wife and kids. McCain and her happiness came at the expense of being unfaithful to his wife.
